How should engineers and other non production staff be introduced to product safety?

All new non production staff should be instructed on their first day at the company that they are contributing to the manufacture of food and therefore have additional responsibility to contribute to product safety.

In case they have need to touch products, ingredients or machinery that comes into contact with these materials they must be instructed in aspects of personal hygiene. In this respect it may be useful for them to be included with the induction of production employees.

Non production staff have added responsibilities because they often are involved with equipment, maintenance tools and chemicals that could cause contamination. The hazards of dirty overalls and greasy hands need particular attention.

These points may seem obvious but it is incredible how often non production workers are negligent and contamination of products occurs.

All staff should be encouraged to be vigilant and to report things that seem unsafe or wrong to their supervisors.
